MASON CITY, IA – Many people go to the casino to gamble recreationally but a percentage of those people are developing pathological gambling issues.

That’s why this week 18 casinos throughout Iowa are coordinating efforts to help their patrons understand the dangers of gambling addiction.

Responsible gaming week is meant to give folks guidelines to follow in order to make sure that gambling remains recreational.

“Responsible gambling has some guidelines to it. Set a limit for myself, don’t go beyond that. Set a time limit for myself, don’t go beyond that. Never use borrowed money to gamble,” says Jay Pedelty, an addiction specialist with Prairie Ridge Addiction Treatment Services.

About 88% of Iowans gamble some time within the year.
