Saudi police arrest 2 suspected al-Qaida militants

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry says police have arrested two foreign residents suspected of having contacts with al-Qaida’s offshoot in Yemen over imminent suicide attacks in the region.

The official Saudi Press Agency quoted a ministry statement late Thursday as saying one of the suspects is Yemini and the other a Chadian who had been deported from the kingdom but returned using a different passport.

The statement said the two exchanged information via the Internet with the Yemeni al-Qaida branch, also known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, using several coded names to discuss “imminent suicide operations in the region.”

The statement gave no further details about the alleged suicide operations, the targets or countries involved. It said investigations were still ongoing.
