Northern Iowa city of Riceville fires police chief

RICEVILLE, Iowa (AP) — The northern Iowa city of Riceville has fired is police chief.

Mayor Dean Eastman confirmed to the Mason City Globe Gazette ( ) that Chief Kim Orth has been discharged by the council. She’d been chief since January 2012.

Orth was placed on paid administrative leave on June 12. Eastman won’t discuss the reasons for the firing and the city investigation that led to it. Orth’s husband, Trent Orth, is a city councilman. He abstained from the vote to fire her.

A Riceville phone listed for the Orths rang unanswered on Monday.

Eastman says the Mitchell County and Howard County sheriff’s departments will continue to handle law enforcement coverage in Riceville until the council decides whether a new chief should be hired.

The 2010 U.S. Census said Riceville has 785 residents.
