Volunteers haul in trash from streams, dump sites

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — About 1,600 volunteers helped clean dozens of waterways and illegal dump sites in the Quad-City area.

The Quad-City Times reports (http://bit.ly/1cXEfaF ) the volunteers took part in the 10th annual Xstream Cleanup on Saturday.

The volunteers were armed with plastic buckets for glass and plastic bags for everything else.

Brandy Welvaert, of the Waste Commission of Scott County, says volunteers removed 45,534 pounds of debris.

The trash was piled into 1,129 bags.

The volunteers also retrieved 288 tires, 15 appliances, nine bikes, 16 pieces of furniture, 16 TVs and 14 mattresses.
