MASON CITY, IA – As a way to help parents afford the rising costs of school supplies, one area group is making it a lot easier on the wallet this year.

At the Mason City Salvation Army, backpacks full of supplies will go to qualifying families tomorrow morning.

Donations were collected all week and for one organizer, she says it’s a great opportunity to help give students a great start and save while doing it.

“If we didn’t have this program going on, kids might go to school without the needed supplies and that would set them apart from other kids so we’re trying to give them that helping hand to have what they need to go back to school,” said Tracy Hedegard, Social Services Director with the Salvation Army.

A number of volunteers gave money or their time to help gather school supplies for the donations and according to Hedegard, the volunteers have meant everything to the cause.

“We had a great group of volunteers that came in this morning and helped us pack. We’ve had volunteers the last couple days helping us sort and count things so we make sure we had enough. We’re doing a generic list for every grade level so the backpacks are full of supplies,” said Hedegard.

Doors open at 9 am tomorrow morning at the Salvation Army and goes until 4 pm.

Families looking for school supplies need to bring proof of ID for every household members, proof of income for 30 days, a rent receipt and utility bill.
