Egypt street battles leave at least 82 dead

CAIRO (AP) — Fierce street fights and other violence have pushed this week’s death toll in Egypt well past 700.

Officials say Friday’s “Day of Rage” called by the Muslim Brotherhood has resulted in least 82 deaths, including 10 police officers.

Unlike Wednesday’s bloody assault by police and troops on Brotherhood protesters, Friday’s violence included gunbattles between residents and police in civilian clothing against protesters. The two sides engaged in running street battles throughout the capital’s residential neighborhoods.

The violence erupted shortly after midday prayers when tens of thousands of Brotherhood supporters answered the group’s call to protest across Egypt. The Brotherhood is now calling for daily demonstrations.
