NIAMEY, Niger (AP) — Seven ministers in Niger’s new unity government are suspending their participation because their party is unhappy with the posts given to its members.
The statement was issued Saturday by a party that holds 23 of the seats in the 113-member parliament.
Earlier in the week, Niger’s president, Mahamadou Issoufou, announced he’d be forming the new government. He said it was necessary to help heal the country, which in May was rocked by a double suicide bombing on a military camp and a uranium mine that killed 35 people.
But his party retained key posts, such as the prime, foreign and defense ministers — apparently leaving other parties with less desirable choices.
