DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A group is proposing building a playground in Des Moines for children with special needs and naming the structure after Ashley Okland, a real estate agent killed in 2011 in West Des Moines.
The city of Des Moines says in a news release that the city’s Park and Recreation board will consider the request for the “Ashley Okland Star Playground” at Ewing Park.
The 27-year-old Okland died after she was shot at a model townhome on April 8, 2011. No arrests have been made.
The group Young Variety and Variety — The Children’s Charity of Iowa made the proposal to the city. Okland was a board member of the organization. The group would fund and build the structure.
The city doesn’t have any playgrounds specifically designed for special needs children.
