Iowa police officer pleads not guilty to assault

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — A Fort Dodge police officer accused of assaulting his wife has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Fort Dodge Messenger reports ( that 41-year-old Jody Chansler made the plea via his attorney, Derek Johnson, Wednesday morning in Webster County Magistrate Court.

Chansler’s trial was set for Sept. 4. He was released on his own recognizance and ordered not to contact his wife. Chansler also was ordered to surrender all of his guns, including any he might use as a police officer.

Chansler’s wife reported the alleged assault early Tuesday morning. She was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

Chansler has been placed on paid administrative leave.
