Colombia, rebels resume peace talks in Havana

HAVANA (AP) — Representatives of the Colombian government and the country’s largest guerrilla army have re-opened peace talks after a brief recess.

A high-ranking rebel negotiator who uses the nom de guerre Ivan Marquez is urging the government not to crack down on a farmers’ strike Monday.

He says “social protest should not be criminalized.”

Marquez spoke Monday in Havana, where peace negotiations began last year.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia formed in the 1960s and is the oldest active guerrilla army in the Americas.
