CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — An explosion in an electric generating station in Cedar Falls destroyed about half of the facility and shook buildings throughout the northeast Iowa city.
KWWL-TV reports (http://bit.ly/170qUeN ) the blast occurred about 10 a.m. Monday at the Cedar Falls Utilities generating station on the western edge of the city.
Utility workers Steve Balthazor and Kevin DeSerano were doing routine tests on a gas combustion turbine when the explosion happened in a different part of the facility.
Both men were treated at the scene and declined further medical attention.
Fire Chief John Schilling says he was in City Hall when he felt the building shake. He says similar reports came in from throughout Cedar Falls.
Officials say the damage won’t limit the utility’s ability to provide power to residents.
