Iowa City set to open newest and largest park

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa City officials are planning weekend events to celebrate the opening of the community’s largest park.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports ( ) a ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned Saturday at the new Terry Trueblood Recreation Area. That will be followed Sunday by a walk to raise money for cancer research and park maintenance.

The more than 200 acre park is in far south Iowa City. Nearly half of the area is made up of a lake.

The park is named after former city recreation director Terry Trueblood, who conceived of the idea for the park at a former gravel pit.

Trueblood died of pancreatic cancer in 2009.

The park includes concrete trails, fishing access, a small marina and an events lodge.

The work was funded by local, state and private funds.
