Manhunt forces others to think self-defense

KIMT News 3 - The manhunt that left an entire Iowa community on high alert is officially  over, but the impact of how it all ended is helping to raise more awareness.

After breaking out of the Clarinda Correctional Facility and later breaking into the home of Jerome and Carolyn Mauderly of Bedford, Rodney Long was shot dead by the homeowners.

It’s something gun experts say all gun owners must be ready for.

“If you feel that you have the duty and the right to own a firearm and carry it, you need to take the measures upon yourself yo make sure that your being responsible with it,” said Chad Colby, Sales Manager with Hart Brothers Weaponry.

Chad Colby says he understands that it’s tough to make tough decisions when it comes to protecting yourself or loved ones.

“Theres never a perfect scenario in training or life. Nothing is ever going to go according to plan. So you can’t really just plan like, ‘i’m going to do this if this happens.’ Sometimes it just goes the way it’s gonna go,” said Colby.

Those with the Iowa State Patrol also agree, being armed comes with it’s own set of rules.

“Anytime you use a firearm, whether it’s in defense of yourself or someone else, that’s considered to be deadly, so there are a lot of legal ramifications if you make a mistake,” said Lt. Daniel Schaffer with the Iowa State Patrol.

Sometimes, being armed is not always an option and for those looking to protect themselves in these situations, general self-defense may be your best shot.

At the Mason City Black Belt Academy, Raul Carolus teaches self-defense and says preparing for any immediate threat, is key.

“Even if you get into a situation where, say you do have a firearm in the house, but your away from it, you still have a way to defend yourself. Giving yourself multiple avenues to defend yourself is a great way to prepare. Hopefully you never ever have to use it but definitely prepare because if you ever need it, you want a plan,” said Carolus.

Authorities say before long made his way into the home, the community had been on high alert, locking doors, windows and limiting travel.

Although as this case proves, sometimes you’re faced with making a tough decision if your life or the life of a loved one is on the line.

The officer who was shot by Long this weekend remains in a Omaha hospital in stable condition.

They say his protective vest kept him from being killed.
