Iowa Speedway, fire marshal trying to set record

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Speedway and State Fire Marshal’s Office are attempting to bring the world’s “stop, drop and roll” record back to Iowa.

The organizations announced Thursday they would try to set the record for the most people simultaneously performing the safety maneuver at the Newton speedway on the evening of Sept. 7.

Iowa set the record in 2011 at the Iowa State Fair, but it was broken by 1,700 people at an event organized by the Indianapolis Fire Department.

As extra encouragement, the Iowa Speedway is offering $15 discounted tickets to those who agree to participate in the event before the “Prairie Meadows 150” ARCA Series stock car race. The ticket will include an upper level grandstand seat and other benefits.

Discounted tickets are available in advance from the speedway.
