Albert Lea teen arrested for DWI

ALBERT LEA, Minn. — Extra patrols are on area roads making sure drivers have not had too much to drink.

Minnesota law enforcement has been looking for drunk drivers since Friday and will continue their efforts until Labor Day.

Iowa patrols will be hitting the road Monday and keeping the extra enforcement until September 8. They will be looking for signs of drunk driving as well as continuing their normal traffic stops.

Some Albert Lea teens figured that out early Thursday morning.

Police arrested 18-year-old Trevor White for driving while intoxicated just before 4 a.m. Thursday. Three others, who were either 18 or 19-years-old, were also cited for underage consumption.

This was after police received a report of suspicious people in the area of Willamor Rd. and Ridge Rd.

Police say this is a time of year where there is a bit of an uptick in this type of thing.

“It tends to be around big events, holidays. Another one that people might not think about is when kids are getting ready to go back to school. The last hoorah with their home friends before they go back to school, so sometimes that happens, or sometimes it’s a last get together before they start high school again,” said Lt. Darren Hanson of the Albert Lea Police Department.

Hanson says with that in mind, the number of underage drinkers has gone down in the area.

“We have a zero tolerance for underage drinking. If we have contact with you, you’re going to get a citation. We also go after the host who provides a place for them to party, so they also get a ticket,” Hanson said.

He said that has cut down on underage consumption quite a bit over the last five to ten years.
