Iowan pleads not guilty in death of brother-in-law

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A 51-year-old Davenport man has pleaded not guilty to felony charges stemming from the death of his brother-in-law.

The Quad-City Times (http://bit.ly/178hoX5 ) says the plea was entered Thursday for Joseph VanHecke. He’s charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault with injury in the June death of 45-year-old Douglas Whalen, also of Davenport.

Officers were sent to Modern Woodmen Park on June 13 after someone reported a fight there. They found Whalen on the ground, bleeding from his head.

VanHecke was arrested that night. Whalen died the next day.
