With the hot and humid weather approaching, what better way to cool down than a little homemade ice cream?
- Salt (Table Salt or Rock Salt)
- Half and Half
- Quart Size Zip-Lock Bags
- Large Container with Lid
- Gloves or a Towel
- Fill the container about half full with ice and add plenty of salt
- In one Zip-Lock bag add Half and Half, Sugar, and Vanilla (Recommended: 1/2 c. Half and Half, 1 tablespoon Sugar, 1 teaspoon Vanilla)
- Remove air from bag and place inside second bag (for added protection) and remove all that air as well
- Place ice cream mixture in bucket of ice and shake for 15-20 minutes
- Enjoy your ice cream
In normal cases, water freezes at 32°F, giving us ice. However, by adding salt, the freezing temperature is lowered to around 20°F. It depends how much salt is added to the ice, but with this method, it is possible to see the temperatures of water (not ice) to be 14°F. Obviously to make ice, we need to cool the liquid to below the freezing level to make it a solid. This same process is used during the winter months when snow plows lay salt down on paved roads. By doing this, the snow makes contact with the road and melts (becoming water) because the freezing point is now below the 32°F mark, since salt was added. If it is solely water on the roadways, they become much less slippery, much like driving in the rain.
NOTE: If you are shaking the bucket of ice yourself, it is important to either wear gloves or wrap the container with a towel. Remember, the water inside can drop to temperatures in the teens which is not safe to touch for long periods of time.
