Counselors aid students in tragic time

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Following the tragic death of two Sioux City School District staff members, officials say counselors will be on hand for students.

It was Thursday morning when Susan Smid and her husband, Stephen Smid, both 58, were found dead in their fire-damaged home.

Now district officials say a crisis team is meeting with students and faculty of liberty elementary school and will be on hand for as long as necessary.

Investigators say the Smid’s died of smoke inhalation when their home caught fire.

Susan Smid taught music at Liberty and in parochial schools. Stephen Smid had worked for school district’s food services.
