MASON CITY, Iowa – We all battle the heat when temperatures reach this high and it’s not just students focusing on hydration.
With temps expected to stay in the 90’s all week, dietitians say staying hydrated especially while outdoors is a must.
“Year round, not just in the summer. Definitely when its warm out like it is today. You definitely want to stay hydrated. You can do that with water cause water is the best way to stay hydrated. It’s obviously the best choice but also just beverages in general,” said Alyssa Corell, Dietitian with Mercy Medical Center North Iowa.
Our bodies naturally sweat when it’s hot out to stay cool but if we’re not hydrated than problems can arise.
Health experts say there are plenty of ways to avoid this even with busy schedules.
“Lettuce has like 90 percent water if you get the crisp lettuce otherwise broccoli, cucumbers, watermelons and grapes. I love frozen grapes, so on a hot day like today that would be a great treat. It’s cool and hydrating,” said Corell.
Another far-less common way is through meats.
Corell says that most meats you find in the grocery stores can contain as much as 60 percent water and can work to hydrate you.
Although she doesn’t recommend throwing away the water bottle any time soon.
