Iowa judicial nominee faced query on marriage vows

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — One of three finalists for the Iowa Court of Appeals was asked during a public interview whether she’s violated marriage vows with her husband, former State Auditor David Vaudt.

Assistant Iowa Attorney General Jeanie Vaudt fielded the question last week from Scott Bailey, a homeschooling advocate and member of the State Judicial Nominating Commission.

Critics are calling the question unusual and inappropriate. It also violated the commission’s own guidelines.

The question came after Vaudt noted her husband resigned in May to lead a national accounting standards board in Connecticut. She told commissioners she stayed in Iowa because “my judicial aspirations are here.”

Bailey asked whether Vaudt made “covenant vows” with her husband and wanted to know if she was breaking them.
