Longtime Coralville mayor won’t seek re-election

CORALVILLE, Iowa (AP) — The mayor of Coralville says he has decided not to run for re-election after helping lead the city for four decades.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen (http://icp-c.com/1caGkOW ) reports that Jim Fausett announced Monday that he will not run for a 10th, two-year term as mayor in November. He says his health is one factor in the decision, and that it “this was the right time for me to get out.”

Fausett was elected mayor in 1995 after serving 18 years on the city council. The city has grown from less than 8,000 residents to more than 20,000 during his time in office.

He says he is proud of the city’s controversial development projects, such as the Coral Ridge Mall, the Iowa River Landing district and the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.
