MARION, Iowa (AP) — The city of Marion plans to install hundreds of wheelchair ramps on sidewalk curbs.
Cedar Rapids television station KCRG says (http://bit.ly/1djMoI2 ) the ramps will be designed to fully comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. City officials say that if Marion doesn’t comply with the federal rules, the city could lose federal and state road funding.
The city says a majority of its 3,300 curb ramps don’t fully comply with the disability act. Sixty-nine percent of the ramps are noncompliant, 21 percent are partially compliant and just 10 percent meet the federal standards.
The city plans to spend about $2 million on the ramp project over the next two decades.
