Plea deal reached in attempted baby theft

MASON CITY, Iowa – A man accused of trying to steal an infant is reaching a plea deal to avoid trial.

Jonathan Workman, 34, filed a written alford plea of guilty through his attorney today in Cerro Gordo County District Court.  In an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit guilt, but admits that there is enough evidence to be convicted on the charges.  Under the agreement, Workman will be sentenced on one count of Child Stealing, and will have two counts of Assault While Participating in a Felony dismissed.

The charges were filed in an incident that happened inside Rumorz in Clear Lake on April 20.  Surveillance video captured images of a man trying to take the six-month-old from the establishment, claiming it was his.  The suspect was stopped by other patrons.  KIMT News 3 spoke to the mother shortly after the incident, who said she works there and had stopped in during daytime hours to see coworkers and change the child’s diaper.

Workman is scheduled to be sentenced on October 21.
