Iowan accused of striking child in neighbor’s home

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa City man has been accused of striking a child inside his neighbor’s home.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen says (http://icp-c.com/1cgv2c0 ) the incident occurred about 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says 34-year-old Juan Canizalez-Perez went into the home without permission and hit the child on an arm. Adults there tried to remove Canizalez-Perez, but he lunged past them and hit the child on a side.

The sheriff’s office says Canizalez-Perez had been drinking, but officers haven’t been able to determine why the child was struck. It’s unclear whether Canizalez-Perez is related to the child.

Johnson County Jail records say Canizalez-Perez remained in custody on Wednesday. Online court records don’t list the name of his attorney.

He’s also known as Carlos Perez.
