Suspect, officer IDed in Minn. shooting

NEW BRIGHTON, Minn. (AP) — Authorities have identified a man shot by police during a drug raid in New Brighton.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says 45-year-old Matthew Vanhofwegen was shot Tuesday after allegedly grabbing the barrel of an officer’s rifle.

Vanhofwegen is being treated at HCMC for multiple gunshot wounds

Members of the Ramsey County Violent Crime Enforcement Team arrived at the home to execute a narcotics search warrant. When Vanhofwegen did not respond to repeated knocks on his door, officers announced themselves and forced the door open.

Authorities say Vanhofwegen grabbed the barrel of Maplewood Police Officer Joseph Steiner’s rifle and was shot during a struggle. Steiner was the only officer to fire his gun.

The Star Tribune (http://bit.ly/17iGswC ) reports Steiner was placed on standard administrative leave. The BCA is investigating.
