New Mexico man gets prison in US pot case in Iowa

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A New Mexico man has been given five years in federal prison for having 320 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle when he was pulled over in Iowa’s Cass County.

The Daily Nonpareil says ( 34-year-old Oscar Salinas-Olivas also was given a 12-month sentence for violating terms of his federally supervised release from prison. He’d been released after a 2010 conviction on a weapons charge.

The 12 months is to be served at the same time as the pot sentence. Salinas-Olivas was sentenced last week in U.S. District Court in Council Bluffs.

Salinas-Olivas, of Albuquerque, N.M., had pleaded guilty to the charges. They stem from a traffic stop on Jan. 16. Authorities say the marijuana was found during a search of Salinas-Olivas’ vehicle.
