St. Paul police auction off unclaimed property

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Treasure hunters got their pick of items with stories behind them, as the St. Paul police department auctioned off unclaimed property.

Sgt. Kurt Hallstrom, who is in charge of the department’s property room and impound lot, says the city was selling goods recovered in investigations, like from burglaries or items left in abandoned and towed cars.

He tells the St. Paul Pioneer Press (http://bit.ly/136JPTU ) the city does its best to return property, but they usually aren’t able to identify the owner.

The city sells abandoned and unclaimed cars at separate impound lot auctions and online auctions. Monday’s auction was conducted by Hiller Auction Service in Zimmerman, Minn.

The city has recently been getting about $1 million a year in vehicle auctions but Hallman expects Monday’s proceeds to be much less.
