NORTHWOOD, Iowa (AP) — A trial has been set for next month for a Northwood man accused of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of a 30-year-old woman.
The Globe Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1ahlhNq ) a trial for 39-year-old Tyrone Washington will begin Oct. 30 in Worth County District Court.
Washington filed a written plea of not guilty Tuesday in the Aug. 5 death of Justina Marie Smith.
Smith was found Aug. 5 with severe injuries at a Northwood park, where she had called 911 seeking help. Before dying, she identified Washington as her alleged attacker. Police learned Washington was driving Smith’s car, and an officer spotted the vehicle later on Interstate 80.
Officers arrested Washington after a chase.
If convicted of first-degree murder, Washington would be sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.
