Grain elevator in Iowa town has new purpose as art

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An abandoned grain elevator in the northern Iowa town of Eagle Grove has new purpose as artwork.

Renamed the Eagle Grove Community Veterans Tower, the structure aims to honor veterans as well as the town’s farming and railroad history. A project to repaint the elevator has been ongoing for about two years.

A small but committed group called the Veterans Tower Board has gradually painted over the structure’s concrete silo and added original artwork. Organizers say it will take some time to see the final product.

The project will have a price tag of between $75,000 and $100,000. Board Chairman Daryl Watts says the group has come up with different ways to raise money locally, including selling hotdogs outside the local grocery store.
