Hearing postponed for Iowa man charged in crash

TIFFIN, Iowa (AP) — A plea hearing for a 20-year-old eastern Iowa man charged in the traffic death of a friend has been postponed.

Zachary Swenka, of North Liberty, was expected to plead guilty Friday to charges stemming from the October 2011 crash that killed 14-year-old Mackenzie Lown, of Amana.

But the Iowa City Press-Citizen says (http://icp-c.com/13tsTY3) his lawyer, Matt Adam, filed for a continuance Thursday. No new hearing date has been set for Swenka, who was charged with vehicular homicide and involuntary manslaughter.

Swenka’s accused of driving more than 100 mph on U.S. Highway 6 on Oct. 17, 2011, before losing control and colliding with a van, killing Lown. Two people in the van and five other teens in Swenka’s car were injured.
