Food center wins St. Paul’s million-dollar prize

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A proposed center to promote and handle locally produced food has won St. Paul’s million-dollar idea contest.

The St. Paul Foundation announced Monday that the Urban Oasis has won its Forever St. Paul Challenge.

The foundation will pay $1 million to establish the center in a building at the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary. The center’s creator, Tracy Sides of St. Paul, will receive $1,000.

Sides tells the St. Paul Pioneer Press ( ) that winning the contest is “a dream come true.”

She described the center as a “food hub, with lots of spokes.”

The center would include a worker-owned cooperative for producing and processing food, a cafe, event center and a food truck.

The contest sought ideas for improving St. Paul. The winning idea was chosen from almost 1,000 applications.
