Judge considering sanity of man who stabbed mother

ST. PETER, Minn. (AP) — A Nicollet County District Court judge will decide whether a Minnesota Security Hospital patient was legally insane when he tried to kill his mother while on an outing at a park in St. Peter.

Judge Allison Krehbiel found 49-year-old Burton Ewing guilty of attempted murder following a hearing Monday. Ewing was in a transition program at the St. Peter hospital for adults classified as mentally ill and dangerous. He left on a pass with his mother on May 8, 2012. The Free Press (http://bit.ly/15My5dc ) says witnesses called 911 when they saw Ewing stabbing his mother with a steak knife. Marlys Olson survived and was called to testify Monday.

Ewing was sent to the Security Hospital after he was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the beating death of his young sister on May 7, 1998.
