Mason City man waives right to speedy murder trial

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Mason City man who’d been scheduled for a murder trial later this month has waived his right to a speedy trial.

A notice was filed in Cerro Gordo County District Court on Monday for Thomas Barlas Jr. He’s charged with first-degree murder, accused of stabbing to death 73-year-old Thomas Barlas Sr. at the elder Barlas’ home in Mason City on July 18.

Thomas Barlas Jr. remains in the Cerro Gordo County Jail, pending bail of $500,000.
