ISU surpasses U. of Iowa with fall enrollment

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State University has surpassed the University of Iowa with its fall enrollment for the first time in more than 30 years.

ISU said Wednesday that more than 33,200 students have enrolled at its Ames campus, a seven percent increase from last fall. Iowa enrolled just over 31,000 students, down one percent from last fall. UNI reported a decrease of about 100 students at its Cedar Falls campus.

The Des Moines Register reports ( ) it’s the first time since 1979 that ISU has passed U of I in enrollment.

ISU’s numbers are due to an increase in undergraduates. Iowa’s drop is due to less graduate students at the Iowa City campus. UNI had a surge of graduate students, but it’s coming off a seven percent enrollment decline last fall.
