North Liberty council OKs backyard chicken hens

NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa (AP) — The North Liberty City Council has given final approval to an ordinance that will let people keep chicken hens in their backyards.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen says (http://icp-c.com/1eh7fNv ) the council voted 3-2 for the proposal at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The chicken hen owners will be required to pay a $20 permit fee each year, along with a $3 band fee for each bird. A refundable deposit of $100 will be held by the city and will be applied to any expenses a chicken causes the city to incur.

Permit holders must complete an approved class in raising chickens and can keep a maximum of four hens. City Administrator Ryan Heiar says roosters will not be allowed.

Also, the hens’ wings must be clipped.
