Walker accepts speaking invitation at U. of Mich.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker has accepted an invitation to speak at the University of Michigan next year.

The announcement comes after the University of Michigan’s Center for the Education of Women earlier withdrew its invitation for “The Color Purple” author to speak at a 50th anniversary event next year. The center’s director had said she didn’t think Walker was the best choice for that event.

Walker posted word of the acceptance on her blog.

The Michigan Daily and MLive.com report she’ll speak at the biennial Zora Neale Hurston Lecture for the department of Afroamerican and African Studies. It’s scheduled to take place Nov. 5, 2014. It’s co-sponsored by the Michigan’s Center for the Education of Women.

“The Color Purple” was a Pulitzer Prize winner in 1983.
