ROCHESTER, Minn. — Rochester police say an 18-year-old male was shot at a home in the southeast part of town.
Police were called around 11:30 p.m. to the 200 block of 15th Ave. SE. That was where they saw the teen suffering from a gunshot wound.
It was a relatively quiet night in the neighborhood until shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday.
“I heard like a pop and I just thought maybe the neighbors had a fire going, so I didn’t think too much of it until all of a sudden I hear sirens,” said Marilyn Brotzel, who lives just down the road from where the incident happened.
Now that she knows what was behind the noise she heard, she has some different feelings.
“Scared, especially when it’s this close,” Brotzel said.
The noise she did hear was a gunshot. When police arrived on the scene they saw an 18-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound at the house.
“The shooting scene was inside the garage of the residence. There were two other people inside the residence at the time the victim was found. He was discovered by someone returning home to the residence,” said Captain John Sherwin of the Rochester Police Department.
He said the two that were in the house at the time did not know this had happened, but neighbors tell police that there more than just those two people at the home.
“We did talk to some neighbors and apparently there had been some type of gathering. We believe some people left the residence at the time, either before or shortly after this victim was located, so we’re exploring those opportunities as well,” Sherwin said.
What police do know is that the teen was brought to St. Mary’s Hospital in life-threatening condition.
“It’s my understanding that he’s had at least one surgery initially and had gone back in for surgery this morning again and his status still remains life-threatening,” Sherwin said.
In July we told you about shots fired in this same neighborhood. Police say there is no reason for them to believe that the two events are directly connected but it is something they are keeping in mind.
As of Friday afternoon police were still investigating the scene. Sherwin said they will be treating this incident as an intentional shooting until they learn otherwise.
