DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Prosecutors have dropped a first-degree murder charge against a Dubuque man who was accused of killing a 2-year-old who had been left in his care.
The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports (http://bit.ly/19rRnjh ) that the charge against 35-year-old Nicholas H. Reed was dismissed on Friday, and he returned home to his family.
Reed had been accused of killing Bentley J. Randall. Authorities say the toddler died Nov. 25 from blunt-force head trauma, consistent with being shaken and slammed, and also suffered significant burns on his body.
Assistant Dubuque County Attorney Chris Corken wrote in court papers that the state no longer had sufficient evidence to prove his guilt. Corken says Reed still faces drug and child-neglect charges.
