NORTHWOOD, Iowa – Authorities are investigating a stabbing and severe beating that sent a woman to the hospital.

At around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, the Worth County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a domestic assault at 208 4th Street North in Northwood.  The responding deputy heard a woman yelling a screaming for help, and when he went inside, he found a man severely beating the woman.

After other deputies arrived, they were able to subdue the man, identified as 39-year-old Michael Lee Zubrod, of Charles City.  Not long after he was placed in handcuffs, he became unresponsive and died while in custody, despite efforts to revive him.

The 48-year-old female victim has not been identified, but investigators believe she was in a personal relationship with Zubrod.  She was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester where she was listed in serious condition Monday evening.  She is being treated for stab wounds and blunt force injuries.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is involved in the case.  An autopsy was performed on Zubrod, but a full report and toxicology report are not expected until later in the week.

Court records show Zubrod has a long criminal history in Iowa, including several convictions for Interference with Official Acts and drug crimes in Chickasaw County, as well as Interference with Official Acts and domestic abuse crimes in Cerro Gordo County.
