Cedar Rapids police: Don’t leave keys in the car

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Cedar Rapids police are telling people not to leave their keys in the car after several incidents of car theft have been reported.

Police say it doesn’t matter whether motorists plan on being away from the car for five minutes or five hours, keys should never be left in a car.

Cedar Rapids officers have recently taken six auto theft reports on the city’s north side. The vehicle owners reported they had left their keys in the car.

Police reported just last month that thefts are on the rise this year. As of the end of July 144 cars had been stolen and in most cases keys had been left behind. That’s up 9 percent from a year ago and up 41 percent from the same period in 2011.
