$15M gift for NYPL afterschool program

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Public Library has received a $15 million gift from the late editor of Cosmopolitan magazine for an afterschool program for underserved children.

The library and the Helen Gurley Brown trust say the new educational program will be available at five library branches in Manhattan and the Bronx.

The program is called NYPL BridgeUP.

The five-year program will provide academic and social support to 250 children in eighth grade. The students will work with a recent college graduate in groups of 10. The goal is to lead the students on a path to college or technical school.

Brown died last year at the age of 90.
