Clive police will honor teen for lifesaving action

CLIVE, Iowa (AP) — The Clive Police Department will honor a West Des Moines teenager with a lifesaving award to thank him for aiding a friend who was choking on a meatball sandwich.

The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/16N28vP ) Clive police will present the award Oct. 27 to 13-year-old Colby Cook, an eighth grader at Indian Hills Junior High School.

Cook performed the Heimlich maneuver after his friend Kyle Randolph choked on a meatball sandwich during lunch. Both boys made little of the event, but word of Cook’s lifesaving action slowly spread through the school and community.

Police will present the award at the school.
