U. Iowa law event to consider right to counsel

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa law school will host a conference commemorating the 50-year anniversary of a landmark legal ruling that guaranteed low-income criminal defendants the right to legal representation.

The Oct. 18 conference in Iowa City will explore the past, present and future of the right to legal counsel.

Experts will consider the history of the Gideon decision, which granted indigent defendants the right to counsel, and current and future developments in this area.

The university says the symposium was conceived by law professor Jim Tomkovicz, who says the decision remains widely respected by the legal community. He notes that many states go beyond the decision’s requirements by offering legal counsel to indigent defendants charged with misdemeanors.
