New details for Northwood death investigation

NORTHWOOD, Iowa- Officials have released new details about the death of a man in custody late Sunday night.

44-year-old Michael Zubrod died after authorities were able to handcuff him.

Police were notified around 11:30 about a possible domestic assault on 4th Street North in Northwood. It was reported by a neighbor who heard a female screaming for help.

When a Worth County Deputy arrived on the scene Zubrod was severely beating the female, 48-year-old Rhonda Schukei, with scissors and a hammer verbally threatening to kill her.

More deputies arrived on the scene, they tried to subdue hime with  Tasers. They had little to no effect on Zubrod.

The deputies had to wrestle him to the ground to handcuff him. He later became unresponsive. Paramedics were unable to revive him.

An autopsy has been performed on Zubrod although the full report is not available yet.

According to Worth County officials, Schukei remains in serious condition at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
