Iowa road worker killed; charges likely for driver

LIBERTY CENTER, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa road construction worker has been killed, and a semitrailer driver accused of leaving the scene of the deadly accident faces charges.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1fy5hZW) that the incident happened Thursday afternoon in southern Iowa’s Warren County, about a mile north of Liberty Center.

The Iowa State Patrol says the semi plowed into a construction zone, killing 27-year-old Christopher Wheeler of Tama, who was flagging traffic.

Troopers arrested 46-year-old Rubin Ward, of Chicago, on suspicion of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. He remains in the Warren County Jail and could not be reached Saturday for comment.

Investigators say he denied seeing Wheeler, but that skid marks at the scene indicate otherwise.
