DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Burlington man convicted earlier of first-degree murder for the August 2012 shooting death of his wife has been denied a new trial.
The Burlington Hawk Eye reports (http://bit.ly/164i8NA) that Des Moines County District Judge John Linn rejected 39-year-old Chico Newman’s request on Friday. Newman had said he was denied a fair trial by an impartial jury.
Friday’s ruling clears the way for Newman to receive an automatic life in prison sentence on Monday.
Newman was found guilty earlier this month.
Police say Newman fatally shot 32-year-old Crystal Newman during an argument at their Burlington home on Aug. 9, 2012. He was not arrested until Feb. 25, when he was found at a motel near the Quad City International Airport in Moline, Ill.
