State trooper dies in upstate NY plane crash

EDINBURG, N.Y. (AP) — An off-duty New York State Police trooper has died after the single-engine plane he was piloting crashed near a lake in upstate New York.

State police say Senior Investigator Timothy J. Cowper died after crash landing just before 4 p.m. Sunday in a wooded lot. They say witnesses called 911 to report the plane was experiencing difficulties.

Authorities say the 55-year-old Cowper was an experienced pilot and a 30-year veteran of the state police. Authorities say the plane crashed on the northern side of the Great Sacandaga Lake in the Adirondack Mountains about 48 miles northwest of Albany.

The Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board and state police are investigating the cause of the crash.
