MASON CITY, Iowa – Wes Moore is not shy when it comes to talking about what he loves to do.
“I’m very passionate about education. I’m very passionate about this idea we all have a role and responsibility to make life better, easier, more supportive, more involving for all people,” said Moore.
Moore’s sharing his story to those at NIACC as part of the Performing Arts and Leadership Series.
He’s a youth advocate who is spreading his message all over the nation, in an effort to show kids that they can make a difference.
Moore’s served in the military and even worked at the white house as part of a prestigious leadership and public service program, but that’s not all he’s done.
“I was working in finance, but eventually it starting eating at me about really finding your work and the idea that the most important question is, isn’t necessarily where you work, but the most important question is what your work is,” said Moore.
For Liz Gales, Director of NIACC’s Performing Arts and Leadership Series, that’s the point of the program at the community college.
“The leadership series is especially important to North Iowa I think its great to have these people and be able to have both adults and the youth interact with people of this stature,” said Gales.
Gales says stories like Moore’s are the ones that really help to inspire all who hear them
“In the case of Wes Moore he’s going to tell the story to the youth of North Iowa that importance of choices you make today will influence the rest of your life,” said Moore.
But Moore just wants to say thank you, to the young ones who will be our future.
“I’m just incredibly proud of what their doing, incredibly proud of their work and example and I just hope that work and that example having them understand education is never simply going to be about that piece of paper they’ll receive, it’s much bigger than that,” said Moore.
Moore is also an author; his book is called “The Other Wes Moore”, one name, two fates.
It’s about two kids, the Wes Moore you saw in this story and another man named Wes Moore who grew up in the same city, with the same name.
But the two ended up leading very different lives.
The other Wes Moore is currently serving a life sentence for felony murder.
I’ts based on the idea that both men were very similar growing up, but made different choices that changed their lives.
