Iowa man gets 30 years in prison for heroin death

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A Dubuque man has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for selling heroin to someone who overdosed and died from the drug.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 50-year-old Alvin Stanley Briggs, Jr. was sentenced Monday in Cedar Rapids. He must also serve a five years supervised release after the prison term.

Briggs pleaded guilty in July to distribution of heroin resulting in death. He admitted that he sold $100 worth of heroin in July 2012 to an individual identified in court filings only as S.R. The person later died as a result of the drug.
