Charges in river deaths dismissed for Iowa man

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — Criminal charges have been dismissed for a Burlington man accused of causing a fatal boat accident on the Mississippi River last year.

The Des Moines County Attorney’s office said Tuesday that charges against 22-year-old Douglas Metcalf were dismissed because the state was unable to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

Metcalf and 22-year-old Joseph Schier, Jr. were charged with boating while intoxicated causing a death and four counts of involuntary manslaughter. Schier’s charges were dismissed in June.

Authorities say Metcalf and Schier were driving jon boats while drunk in May 2012 when they caused a head-on collision that killed four people and injured several others.

The Burlington Hawk Eye newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/1aIeYyR) the victims’ families have not said whether they will file civil lawsuits against the men.
